Bodgers Ball Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 May 2007

The monster heads of Wallington Hall, NorthumberlandThe Bodgers Ball is the annual meeting of the Association of Pole Lathe Turners and Green Woodworkers (APT) and I'm very pleased that it will be coming to the North East of England in 2007. The venue is Wallington Hall, a National Trust Property set in the beautiful countryside of  Northumberland. The photograph shows the famous monster heads of Wallington. My children still believe the rest of their bodies are buried underground!

The National Trust have kindly offered us space at Wallington for perhaps 100 or more APT members to gather for our Annual General Meeting on the Saturday and demonstrations for the public on the Sunday. As well as the awesome sight of perhaps 30 or so pole lathes operating there will be a range of other woodland craft workers demonstrating their skills. For more information or to join the APT go to www.bodgers.org.uk

A new APT North Group is Launched

APT North members gather on 3 December 2006
On a wild, wet and windy December at the Flint Mill Workshop the inaugural meeting of an APT North Group got underway. With the kettle boiling and the tarpaulin offering some shelter from the heavy showers, we discussed what shape and form our new grouping should take, as well as doing some green woodworking. Niall knocked out some spoon blanks before using his new adze to shape an ash bowl. Clive tested out his new Ashley Iles ferret ring tools on the pole lathe, producing a fine rattle. Bill was keen to test the theory that the special properties of willow wood could ease the symptoms of arthritis if used daily as a breakfast bowl. Maurice turned his hand to gypsy flowers for the forthcoming Beamish Edwardian Christmas Fair. Andy sharpened the beautiful little axe he'd bought, with a tool-makers stamp showing it was over a century old. It was a pleasure to help bring this tool back to life. We'll be meeting again at the Harehope Quarry Project in Weardale on Sunday 18 February 2007. Please do join us. Contact me for further details.
